Viña Varela Zarranz

History

The Varela Zarranz family entered the world of wine in 1933, acquiring a decade later, the vineyard manor built in 1888 by Diego Pons who, together with Harriague, Vidiella, Varzi and Portal is one of the Uruguayan wine making pioneers.

This fact makes the Varela Zarranz family the heiress and bearer of a vigorous history. The incorporation of a third generation in 1986 brought about a renovation plan which included new vineyards and the modernization, with sate of the art technology, of the production plant.

This third generation presently leads the enterprise having inherited from their elders, a life philosophy of constant improvement and excellence achievement based on training and renovation.

Winery

Our winery cherishes Uruguayan wine making heritage elements which are of an enormous historical value. You will find a perfectly balanced harmony between the old and the new with the most modern technology.

In the main room and the underground cellar, which dates back to 1892, the largest collection of French oak barrels in use in our country rests comfortably next to the modern barrels where some of the best wines produced by this family spend part of their life.

The equilibrium between technology and passion, paves the road of a prestigious, avant-guard enterprise.

Vineyards

More than 100 hectares of land are home to vineyards of French origin. The Uruguayan emblematic Tannat grape, heads the list of the red wine grapes followed by Cabernet Sauvignon, whose presence in this establishment can be traced to the XIX century, Cabernet Franc and, Merlot. Among the white wine grapes, we grow Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and our exclusive production of Muscat Petit Grain.

Our chosen conducting system is the Lyra, developed by the French researcher Prof. Alain Carbonneau. It is among the systems that allow a wide vegetation expression which is the main characteristic of the vines growing under our soil and weather conditions.

The vineyard surface encompasses two wine regions differentiated by their soil characteristic: Cuatro Piedras and Suárez.

Old house, park and tasting room

As soon as you cross the gate you enter a different World. The first things you see are the vineyards which dominate the fields. They are surrounded by a variety of trees where the ancient olives mark the path that takes you to the cellar and majestic house built in 1888 where the Zarranz family resides.

The ancient manor and the cellar are immersed in a romantic park setting with the presence of araucaria trees, casuarinas, ancient eucalyptus and Italian sculptures adorning it. Under the house, you will find the old thick-stone walls basement transformed into a tasting room.
